10-Day Annapurna Circuit Trek: The Ultimate Himalayan Adventure
Embark on a soul-stirring journey through the heart of the Himalayas. This 10-day Annapurna Circuit itinerary takes you from lush sub-tropical forests to the high-altitude desert of the Mustang region. Challenge yourself with the legendary Thorong La Pass (5,416m) and witness the spiritual harmony of Muktinath.
Daily Itinerary
Day 1: Kathmandu to Dharapani (1,800m) – The Great Drive Your adventure begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Besisahar via bus, followed by an off-road shared Jeep experience to Dharapani. Transition from the city bustle to the tranquil sounds of the Marsyangdi River.
Drive duration: Approx. 10 hours.
Day 2: Dharapani to Chame (2,670m) – Into the Pine Forests The trek officially starts! Wind through atmospheric pine forests and cross traditional suspension bridges. As you reach Chame, the district headquarters of Manang, enjoy your first up-close views of Annapurna II.
Trek duration: 6 hours.
Day 3: Chame to Upper Pisang (3,300m) – Alpine Wonders Walk through a dramatic river valley with steep rock faces. Upper Pisang offers a breathtaking vantage point of the entire Annapurna range and a glimpse into authentic Tibetan-style architecture.
Trek duration: 6 hours.
Day 4: Upper Pisang to Manang (3,540m) – The Heart of the Trail Trek through the rain shadow of the Himalayas. The trail opens up into a wide, sun-drenched valley. You’ll be surrounded by the majestic peaks of Annapurna II, III, and Gangapurna.
Trek duration: 6 hours.
Day 5: Acclimatization Day in Manang – Rest & Explore Altitude safety is our priority. Spend the day exploring Manang’s monasteries, visiting the Gangapurna glacial lake, or taking a short hike to “Ice Lake” for panoramic views.
Activity: Light hiking and cultural exploration.
Day 6: Manang to Yak Kharka (4,050m) – High Altitude Meadows Leaving the valley behind, the trail ascends steadily. You’ll walk through juniper bushes and alpine grass, often spotting blue sheep or yaks grazing in their natural habitat.
Trek duration: 6 hours.
Day 7: Yak Kharka to Thorong Phedi (4,450m) – The Base Camp A short but steep climb brings you to the foot of the pass. Rest early and hydrate; tomorrow is the big day. The atmosphere here is charged with the excitement of fellow trekkers.
Trek duration: 6 hours.
Day 8: Thorong Phedi to Muktinath (3,800m) via Thorong La Pass (5,416m) The climax of your journey! A pre-dawn start leads you to the summit of Thorong La Pass. Celebrate your achievement at 17,769 ft before descending to the sacred temples of Muktinath, a site revered by both Hindus and Buddhists.
Trek duration: 12 hours (challenging but rewarding).
Day 9: Muktinath to Jomsom (2,720m) – The Mustang Landscape Descend through the Kali Gandaki Valley, the deepest gorge in the world. The landscape shifts to a striking, arid desert-like terrain. Jomsom greets you with its famous winds and cozy mountain lodges.
Trek duration: 5 hours.
Day 10: Jomsom to Pokhara – Farewell to the Mountains Swap your trekking boots for a comfortable seat as you drive back to Pokhara. Relax by the Fewa Lake and celebrate your successful Annapurna Circuit completion.
Drive duration: 8 hours.
Essential Trek Information
To ensure you have the best experience on the Annapurna Circuit, please review these essential details:
1. Best Time to Trek
Spring (March to May): Best for rhododendron blooms and stable temperatures.
Autumn (September to November): Offers the clearest skies and crisp mountain views after the monsoon.
2. Difficulty Level: Challenging
This trek is physically demanding, especially the crossing of Thorong La Pass. Previous hiking experience and a good level of cardiovascular fitness are highly recommended.
3. Permits Required
You will need two main permits for this trek:
ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Permit)
TIMS Card (Trekkers’ Information Management Systems)
4. Accommodation & Meals
The route is famous for its “Teahouse Trekking.” You will stay in local lodges with basic but comfortable amenities. Meals typically include the nutritious Dal Bhat (lentil soup and rice), pasta, and pancakes.
5. Packing Essentials
Sturdy, broken-in trekking boots.
Layered clothing (thermal base layers + fleece + down jacket).
High-quality sleeping bag (rated to -15°C).
